How come ecology is never taken seriously, both by laymen and those in the STEM field? I often have discussions with people about the impact of climate change on various populations of certain species, but people more often than not treat it as a non-issue if some species go extinct.

The climate and industry impact created by extinction of most species would be vast. Yeah, arguments like 'save the panda' because they are cute are one form of meaningless, but those aren't nearly as common as what's talked about with actually useful/keystone species. Dealing with brainlets who can't understand even the most basic principles of ecosystem analysis gets incredibly grating after long enough.

Is the reason this happens because serious conservation efforts are conflated with ones that are more meaningless? I'm just baffled as to how actually seemingly intelligent people can be so dumb when it comes to something like this.
