We need to stick a magnet in a certain place out in space first. This is difficult, but far from impossible even with current tech-a mere 1 tesla magnet would suffice, about the strength of existing MRI magnets. The effects would be staggering-within a few years, you could start walking around on mars in a heavy coat with a breathing mask instead of a pressure suit. The rad situation would also sharply improve as the now protected atmosphere regenerated.

This is a project to approach in earnest as we push on towards colonizing mars.

That could be processed to reclaim minerals.
How far are we planning to go with the terraforming, for instance, a project like a magnetic shield on L1 orbit?
