intelligent life, what characteristics are actually required as far as you can tell?

people are always talking about how varied aliens could be, but there has to be limiting convergence right? bonus points for reasons

here's what I've come up with (albeit, very generalized)

-manipulators (needed to study the world and learn, right?)
-advanced brain (derp)
-spacial awareness (sight or echolocation)
-terrestrial (i think science and shit wouldn't evolve properly in water)
-family unit (to pass knowledge down)
