Columbia carried 7 astronauts, you would've needed 3 capsules to get them all back. Maybe 1 could've been taken from the ISS to rendevous with Columbia but that still leaves you with 2 more needed.

Maybe a Progress capsule could've replenished the Shuttles fuel tanks and air to allow them to go to the ISS.

>Orbital refueling.
>High risk.

Offcourse the ignorant fuck doesnt know that the Progress spacecrafts have been doing that with the ISS since the late 1990's and the Mir since the mid 1980's.

Progress spacecraft periodicaly refuel the ISS so that the station can use its thrusters to maintain orbit altitude and adjust the orbit to avoid collisions or prepare the station to receive visitors by pushing the station to the right altitude.

Yes, you really need to be on the ball with the Progress spacecraft these days because of the ultra-fast launch to docking method. They time the launch so that it takes the minimum amount of time to reach the ISS.

In this case it took a little over 3 hours.

It is a massive improvement because in the past it could take up to 2 days if not more for Soyuz and Progress capsules to dock with the ISS.

They have to learn Russian in order to operate the Soyuz spacecraft. So at the moment, Russian is mandatory.
