In a world wrought with absurdity and complete improbability Arthur Dent’s relative normalcy may seem to indicate that he is just an observer, meaningless in the bigger picture. He gets scared, confused and is upset when his home is destroyed. In the admission of his own normalcy Dent is proven to be the queerest of characters in the Universe. When the laws of physics and reality are based on the absurd and impossible a person that is normal is actually automatically abnormal. What separates him from the other humans that live on earth is that he made contact with Ford Prefect before the destruction of Earth. That he was chosen out of billions of Humans to be the one sole survivor. He was chosen, predestined to be saved. The fact that he was saved just because he chanced onto Ford Prefect and got on his good side. He is the only character in the novel that has the most and at the same time the least control over his fate and his destiny. Arthur Dent is a living anomaly.
