>>what are we waiting for
more reliable mining and regolith handling systems.

It's impractical to have humans continually unjam them like we do on Earth.

Politics. War. Etc. We could have had a fucking space colony by now. If it wasn't for the fucking vietnam war, NASA could have afforded to make a space colony.

>>Where is my nuclear propulsion system?
Radioactive exhaust. Not happening until we get fusion.

Chemical and electric propulsion are more than good enough.

>>My space elevator to a starbase in orbit?
If we put all our money from military spending into space exploration we could have easily had a manhattan project for developing the long carbon nanotubes necessary to do this.

Well one can just use lunar or asteroidal regolith for much of the radiation shielding. One doesn't build a space colony from resources launched from Earth alone.

Correct. The Earth doesn't have ubiquitous high vacuum. The Earth has weather and other unpredictabilities.

There have been plans proposed for building replicators on earth:
http://www.molecularassembler.com/KSRM.htm

Some have proposed building self-replicating solar cell factories in the desert. Also FANUC, a Japanese robot company uses industrial robots to build industrial robots lights out.

Now that's an interesting result of trolling. Perhaps /sci/ should raid that site. Still though, I'm posting robots.
