You know how with a water hose that you can make the water come out faster if you partially cover the hose end with your thumb? Same basic principle with rocket nozzles. However, counter-intuitively if you constrict the fluid flow to the point where the fluid moves as fast as sound can travel through it, then constricting the flow even further wouldn't make it go faster. Instead, after the point in the flow where it travels at sonic speeds (called the throat) the flow area is expanded which makes it go even faster.
