>Very tragic.
True, and avoiding that is a big part of this general. He probably didn't get any real help or advice. Many people I know as well as myself didn't get good advice either, and after crashing out of several imploding companies I consider myself lucky I finally ended up in a good job. Luck favours the well prepared, they say, but luck counts for more than I am comfortable with. A few of my colleagues could have gone on to a paid for PhD, had they gotten good advice.

So that is what this is about, and also the importance of staying comfy.

Look at something simple yet wonderous, like clouds, an animal or just anything. Fill your mind with thoughts how incredible it all is. Enjoy it and immerse yourself in confiness. That is how life is, sufficiently great pleasures from even little things.

So hang on in there, anon.

At some point everyone gets to that phase. Then you complete your thesis. And yes, it is a lot more cut throat than is healthy but with a Physics PhD you are fortunate enough not to be beholden to feudal academic warlord professors.

Do at least one post. doc and in a different country. And enjoy.

That is what I did. I went to Japan for two years, it was awesome. And I would have done it again.

Get enough sleep. Enjoy the quiet things, like looking up at the stars and the moon, look at flowers, appreciate the quiet things in life. And stay comfy.

Opie, how are you doing? Hang on in there, perhaps the idea about useful distractions can work.

Meanwhile, please enjoy another sample from my comfy-folder.

Hey /sci/, I have a question regarding the possibility of turning farmland into a barren wasteland through the use of chemicals.

I have a large surface of land where vegetables are grown (mostly potatoes) and I need to make it unusable for farming. I've read about ancient conquerors "salting the land" in order to make it barren but can't find much information on whether this is scientifically accurate or a myth.

This would have to be done only on a precisely limited surface, so I can't use anything as inaccurate as an airplane to disperse any chemicals.

If salt would do the trick, I'd be happy to do it by hand.

Any advice and resources on the matter would be most welcome.

Should I take Econometrics or a Calculus-Based probability class next semester? I want to hear /sci/'s opinion on the two subjects. They both seem interesting, and I have to take both for my major/minor, but there's a scheduling conflict at my uni.

What class is more interesting, and which is generally more difficult? From what I've learned from the catalog, Econometrics is going to be primarily focused on linear regression models and its assumptions.

Also, as a side note, I'm considering changing to a STEM major. Is Econometrics (and general linear models) useful for something other than Econ/Finance?
