I started on College Algebra 1. Sure, I had to spend an extra couple of semesters, but I also worked through a lot of major requirements(econ class, public speaking, liberal arts requirements etc) and other things that would have filled my schedule and made my day more hectic. By doing this, I actually made my engineering degree fairly easy compared to my peers and I graduated with a 3.9 GPA and had much much more time on my hands.

Employers don't care at all how long it takes you to graduate. It is already advised by most to take 5 years for an engineering degree, just to make it easier on you.
