Fellow /sci/entists, come and deliberate a little while:

I have had issues with panic, and anxiety in general, for several years. At 23, nearly earned a BA, working a full-time job, resetting the tracks of my life to get that dream career in academia, I hold in my hand a bottle of 50mg sertraline. I have been wavering on taking meds for a while. I can't quite grasp it, but I fear that by gambling the side-effects for a little emotional stability it will cost me something else very personal. Have any of you been in this situation?

Really close to flushing the pills down the toilet. Or this panic-induced mood swing?

the basis of scientific arguments are created by logic
the basis of religion is centered around faith
faith and logic are on opposite ends of the spectrum, they cannot co-exist

why do i still find myself compelled to argue then? i must be a fool. does anyone else get suckered into these discussions knowing full well it's pointless.

Say, any of you remember a novel that used to get linked to on /sci/ a lot during the summer?

It was about a futuristic post-scarcity society that was set up in Australia and the guy is in the underclass in the US and two chicks from the society come and take him to Australia and get him up to speed on the whole thing?

Just looking for the link again, can't google anything specific enough

Semi-Easy chem questions here

What exactly drives atoms to have a full valence shells? As in why do they want full ns2np6 orbitals (or full d orbital), especially interested in the case that where the atom is already at a balanced charge (next question is semi-related)

Why do covalent bonds happen? I understand Ionic compounds form because Ions of opposite charges attract, but why do things like O2 or H2 occur? (something with electron spin?)

I would love detailed answers, my chem book doesn't go into good detail and I never have good luck with science on wiki.

Thanks in advanced! (Assuming someone actually answers)

ok, so i was chatting to my friend the other day and he asked me this:

Do you think your eyes move faster than your body?

i gave him a response along the lines of,well its a badly phrased question, then got onto saccades and the refresh rate of the eye, nerve signal delays to do with distance from the brain etc.

and in the end he said, look i dont want some scientific fact, i want to know what YOU THINK.

this puzzles me,i mean,if i know the facts, why would i think differently? Essentially my opinion stands for nothing, because I know the answer, I dont have to THINK about what it would be, I know better.

i eventually retorted with this, and he got very annoyed at me, we got in an arguement blah blah blah.

im just wondering, does this/has this sort of thing ever happened to you?how do you go about asnwering without just putting people out of their comfort zones,i dont want to have to just play along and answer "I THINK THIS,BLAH BLAH BULLSHIT" just to go through the motions of a conversation with someone, that seems insincere, what would /sci/ do?
