Weird alternate history idea:
In 1962, Russia was choosing its 20-ton-to-LEO class vehicle. Korolev proposed the N11, which was an N1 minus the first stage.
Chelomei proposed the UR-500, AKA: Proton. Proton, obviously, won.
It’s fun to think about what would’ve happened if the N11 had been selected. A lot of the engine reliability issues of the NK-15 would’ve been found before the N1 first flew.

I’m not saying the Soviets would’ve beat the US to the moon, but it increases the likelihood of the N1 having a successful flight earlier on.
