From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

What do cosmologists do on a daily basis?
I find the subject matter utterly fascinating, but I always hear about people reading Cosmos and taking astronomy and being disappointed by doing nothing but collecting and analyzing data.

A higgs-boson particle walks up to a Catholic church.

The priest stops him at the door and says "I'm sorry, you can't participate in our service today."

The higgs-boson particle says "What?! You can't have mass without me!"

From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Look again at that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

You really don't know anything about astrophysics do you? A star is too bright to directly view a planet any other way than by getting close to it.

And besides, even when you can view the planet itself, you have to essentially get within its gravity well to determine if there's sentient life on it.

This picture is what our planet looks like just from the edge of our solar system.

You see any civilizations down there? Yeah, neither does anyone else.

Holy shit.
The only difference between "time" and "space" is the same difference between "width" and "height"; likewise, their similarities are the same.
Charted from a "god's-eye view", there is no more significance to "me five inches to the left" than "me five seconds in the past".

Further more, unless one believes in a "soul" (and I see no reason to), there is no ultimate distinction between the particles that are "me", as they are now, and as they will be in a billion years.
Given the vast number of particles that I am composed of, the huge timespan involved and the volatility of the earth, I, or rather the particles that constitute me, AM EVERYWHERE ON EARTH.

Some of you will point out that there's more to "me" than a structural composition, a specific set of processes that form "conciousness" and "personality" and all that jazz.
BUT FUCK THAT.

And then, there's this picture...
