Well as this is /sci/ lets talk about some real nigga shit

Mediocrity principle: Life happens on Earth, therefore any other place like Earth should have life. There are a lot of planets, and more than a few earth like planets in earth like orbits. Therefore life is nothing too special, and we are rather mediocre.

Rare-Earth hypothesis: The reason we aint finding shit, is because life only occurs under such particular circumstances. This theorizes that life occurs from a very specific sequence of events that occur randomly. Therefore life is rare

Elon Musk would be the primary difference between SpaceX and any other corporations or competing contracts.

The man is a god damn genius, with a huge vision. True Humanist. I myself am very excited about both SpaceX and Tesla Motors (Musk's electric car company).

In combination with Planetary Resources, the exploitation of space is Humanity's best hope for survival and that is certain. Once we harness the resources of our Solar system we can kiss all the petty squabbling on Earth goodbye...that is as long as Religion finally gets put in its place.

OP makes a good point

Since life on our planet is carbon based, one could assume it is a rather common form of life (Mediocrity), but not necessarily the only form.

Id like to think a rather common alternative would be silicates, and the more likely advanced civilizattion encounter would occur with some sort of synthetic as space is unsuitable for the more squishy parts of life.
