Almost certainly wasn't planned. She's simply a diversity hire who got in far over her head while those who helped her get there engaged in non-stop ass covering for their (and her) mistakes. She loves the idea of being an astronaut, with all the attention and glory that comes with it but it turned out that life on ISS is mostly boring maintenance shit that just never ends. Unlike a job at a Fortune 500 where there are plenty of others around to pick up and clean up after people like her, everyone on ISS is essential to keeping it operating. And unlike a job on Earth, she couldn't just give two weeks notice and walk away. She was trapped in her own incompetence and unmet expectations.
