Is a lightning characterized by a "random walk"?

What benefit does all this Electromagnetics shit actually have upon the world?

Why in fuck do we need to know what happens when move a charged object near a conductor, or what happens in a black body, or how the electromagnetic force works?
How will knowing any of that stuff allow me to make a commodity I will sell and make a profit?

While the worlds biggest geeks were arguing over what a current is, Abner Doubleday invented baseball.

So again, what is your contribution? Why should anyone care about your electroshit when no profit is to be made in it?

Hello /sci/. I'm trying to find out when was an explanation for the nature of lightnings that didn't rely on the supernatural first given, can't seem to find anything so I thought you guys could help.

Also interested in what exactly a ball lightning is.

Hey sci. I was wondering if there somehow was a way to make aspirin( or any other anti-inflammatory, pain-killer) into a local anesthetic. Or, if there is a way of quickly making a local anesthetic out of common household items.

/sci/, after drunken discussion with a friend, he raised a point about black holes which I couldn't answer.
If space is expanding, surely something that is (just) inside the event horizon could escape it as space is created between the black hole and the EH?
Is there something obvious that's being missed here?

Consider a system of one particle in equilibrium with a heat bath. The particle has two microstates of energy <span class="math">e_1=0
and <span class="math">e_2=\Delta
. find the probabilities <span class="math">p_1
and <span class="math">p_2
for the mean energy of the system to be .2<span class="math">\Delta
, .4<span class="math">\Delta
, .5<span class="math">\Delta
, .6<span class="math">\Delta
, and <span class="math">\Delta
, respectively. What are the corresponding temperatures? (hint: Write the mean energy as x<span class="math">\Delta
and express your answers in terms of x.)

What does this even mean? How are there two probabilities? Can anyone give me some direction? I've read the chapter a few times and the problem still doesn't make any sense. Also, sorry for the reposts, latex has been shitting on me.
