A lot of SSTO designs from the 60’s and onwards featured a fuckhuge aerospike at the base being used as the heatshield because…I guess it works? No idea if it works on bell nozzles but aerospikes seem doable.

A lot of 60’s-70’s reusable rockets were actually VTVL, except they used a separate series of jet engines for landing because computers weren’t smart enough to do that with rocket engines.
