Makes sense, less policing reduces personal stress on both sides which reduces aggressiveness between the two parties (the police and the "policed"). Stress affects cortisol levels which itself controls for fight or flight body response. Fight or flight body response affects agression/ anti-social behavior of those in question.

This doesn't mean that the reduction of policing will reduce the frequency of general crime itself. But it can probably reduce the severity of a given crime by reducing the likelihood of escalation on both sides due to higher stress. Said stress which causes higher agression thus raising the stakes between the two parties. Since both parties on either side tend to usually be male (the sex most affected by cortisol levels specific to agression/anti-social behavior from fight or flight response) the severity can escalate to a much higher degree than if it was between two females or male vs female on either side.
