Any idea how nitrocellulose stacks up to the KNO3/sugar? I know it is about twice the energy density of black powder.
The nitric acid can be had online pretty easy and the only other thing you need is some cotton or cornstarch.

My father was an engineer, knew everything about the business of manufacturing.

If someone spends a billion dollars on a machine so they can tell it "Go to the asteroid belt, bring back platinum." they are going to add "Don't get broken."
A device with that level of autonomy is going to be making a lot of decisions on its own.
