FTL travel is impossible, both in practice and in principle.

Statistically speaking, it is highly likely that there are many other advanced civilizations in our universe. Solving the drake equation with the lowest possible number for each factor still gives us a universe filled with life.

If it was possible to travel faster than c, chances are many alien civilizations would have mastered it and would be visiting us.

Since this has (probably) never happened, it's reasonable to postulate that c is a truly fundamental law of the universe and can never exceeded.
