What the hell do you mean for what? To understand why things are true.

Also, "studying the proofs" is a very minimal part of such a course. You read them until you understand each step, then move on. Writing proofs is where you actually learn things.

Didn't you take discrete math as a CS major? Haven't you ever done induction?

You assume your assumptions and deduce the conclusions. The only way to get good at it is to write a lot of proofs.
