Is there a limit to how many habitable planets a star could hold in its orbit? How many could we realistically expect a stable system to harbour?

Hey /sci/ I'm an amateur astronomer, proud carbon-based life form of Earth, proud human being and lover of the universe. I thought I would share this with you. It's a blog I posted.
Imagine the future:

25 years from now - computers even more fundamental to human beings, better machines, computers everywhere… global communication is even more powerful and widespread

50 years from now - 3rd generation of human beings to be raised entirely within a computer/digital society, all new houses will be built with computer systems in them controlling lighting, sound, other computers, appliances, etc…

200 years from now - interstellar travel (or at least inter-planetary), more machines, computers everywhere (may not be digital anymore but something else), colonies on other planets, super intelligence because of extreme abundance of information? complete loss of religion and superstition as the information age will be in full swing.
