the AI's "environment" = reality

If we reach that level of technological advancement then we will simulate another reality. The reasons for that reality to be alike our own OR different are plenty: research, genealogy, reenactment, nostalgia, recreation, other...
Given more time we would simulate thousands or millions of other realities.
And then we would ask the question: Out of millions of simulations ARE we really the only ones not simulated)

tl;dr: if we achieve true AI & nested simulations are possible we are almost certainly in a simulation.
