Algae.

My question is, when is peak oil? Some say it happened in the '70s, others insist it happened recently or will happen soon. I've also heard that it's a 'myth' to justify gouging prices.

Part of me thinks that raising gas prices to obscene amounts would be a good idea, as long as there's free public transit
>Only rich people with their own vehicles
>Less car accidents
>More buses
>Less pollution
>Wars waged for reasons other than oil, like DA ILLUMINATI

I'm a bit worried, /sci/. Recently I came to think about that peak oil thing. Fact is that we're running out of oil in about 10 to 20 years and until this time we'll have to change our entire energy supply to other sources. Given the fact that today nearly everything depends on oil, this seems to be an impossible task. Will we manage to do it or is society doomed?

What energies will replace oil?

We all know that solar and nuclear power are infeasible.

Why do optimism fags always assume the peak oil graph looks like a gaussian function?
Shouldn't it be exponential up until the maximum and then dropping instantly to zero?

>Japan will power down its last operating nuclear reactor this weekend, finalizing the country’s sudden turn away from a once-preferred energy source and leaving it nuclear-free for the first time since 1966.
>resource-poor Japan has scrambled to import costlier fossil fuels to fill the energy void.

Since peak oil will certainly happen or it has already happened, can any country survive the effects of diminishing oil supplies without nuclear energy? What will happen when Japanese realize this is not a sustainable option? It's get harder to build the reactors and infrastructure in a short time span.

All resources are finite. Some day they will be depleted.
What's science gonna do about this?
How are we gonna prevent the collapse of civilization?

We all know that resources are finite.
We all know that our economy, our energy supply and our industrial production are fully dependent on oil.
Peak oil has been reached some years ago.
The production of oil is going to rapidly decline within this decade.

What's science's answer to the problem of peak oil?

Oil is needed almost everywhere around us, plastic, drugs, vehicles and so on, is there a way to replace oil completly in every products or we will be fucked soon? is it possible to create oil from scratch? it is evident there will be not enough in the future to sustain the world consumption of oil (maybe by foraging underwater though?)

What do you think?

/g/ doesn't believe in peak oil. How do I persuade them?
