>The problem is that sometimes a line of textbook can contain hours of math in it. Figuring everything out is very tiring.
Keep your chin up, anon. You'll get better at this over time.

I'm new here but I'm really liking this board. I'd like to be as knowledgeable about science as you.

What would you consider 'basic' science?
How much basic science should I know before getting into a specialized subject?
My interests aside, what type of science would you recommend?

Sorry if these are vague(or stupid) questions. I'm just looking for a decent foundation to participate in conversation with you guys.

How do I improve retention and memory of shit I read?

Right now I do a lot of reading for exams (exam season starting at end of january for me), but I also do a lot of "extra" reading because I'm interested in learning more. Though I feel like I waste my time because I have a hard time keeping what I read through.

I tried speedreading as it's supposed to increase retention, but it's hard to do with scientific text that has a lot of special terms used or chemistry related names. I tried regular reading but I don't feel like it is any different at the end of the day retention-wise.

It frustrates me that I have access to years and probably decades of scientific publications but I'm not able to "keep" what I'm reading. Eventhough I am aware that these texts are written by people that have spent years in their field, I still feel like a pleb struggling with their texts.

So I ask you /sci/, what do you do to increase retention?
How many pages do you read before you take a break? For how long do you read?
Do you keep notes?
Practice makes perfect, but how do you 'practice' text that has no problem sections after each chapter?

I want to use my time as a student to actually learn shit that exceeds the requirement to narrowly pass exams.

Haha.. yes. Yes you are right. Its true about economics.

With that said, I think some economists, mainly econometricians and legitimate academics, can do science quite well with a set of data.

>>4778832

I dont know why you are so mad. I didnt come here to make an argument. I like talking to you guys and sharing ideas.

I just came in here to make a statement that may or may not have any bearing on whatever logical point you were trying to make.

I agree, computer science isnt a science. However I think your #2 doesnt contradict #1. You claim CS has no high level mathematics (which I dont believe) and imply it still has some amount of mathematics. Your statement #1 only mentioned mathematics in general. No distinction between high and low level maths.

Economics, minor in math.

>Everyone
You are all nice people and I am glad I get to spend time with you.

Oh yeah, and I would say ethics is awesome if "awesome" wasnt a value statement to begin with. Lets just say I cant help but to follow implied ethical reasoning in my day to day life. I would take the time to major in philosophy if I didnt have concerns about wasting my time.

I was reading the newspaper today and came across this scribbled somewhere:

<span class="math">\displaystyle \int_{-\infty}^{\infty} e^{-x^2}dx = \sqrt{\pi}
Is there an elaborate (or simple) proof of this or was it just bullshit? I tried writing out the Taylor series representation for <span class="math">\displaystyle e^{-x^2}
and integrated a few terms..that didn't help me much with an improper integral.

So I adjusted the limits of integration by breaking up the integral at some bound, c, and then took the limit of the resulting two integrals.

Which really didn't get me anywhere either.

Ideas?

So are people legitimately right and left brained?

I'm good at math but love history and geography.

Is it just intelligent vs. normalfag or Autist vs. Reader?

Be gentle, here's some OC I came up with...yes i'm a chemfag lol

A chemist went to see a locksmith about fashioning a replacement key for his door. The key was made superbly and in record time. Unfortunately, the locksmith was called away elsewhere and ended up returning him the chelate.
