so /sci/
as we can see that Mars has a thin atmosphere and is Mars atmosphere same as Earth's? if yes, is there any possibilities for animals or humans to live there? oh, and can plants grow and do the photosynthesis cycle in Mars?

You are the first person to walk on the surface of Mars.

What are your first words?

Planets are science related. Help me /sci/

How do I go about figuring out what t he color of a planets surface, or atmosphere would be based on its composition? ie we know mars has a red surface because of the iron oxide. How would I know what a planets atmosphere is mainly composed of if it were a green? etc

this is important

0.30L + 0.38A^1/2 - 3V^1/3 ≤ 16

L = 65 ft
V = 600 ft^3

so,

0.38A ≤ 1796.5

am i erring by ignoring the exponents of A and V? did i skip over something?

So now that we're coming close to having developed the technology to do so, would you willingly choose to live the rest of your life on mars? Let's assume you have a direct internet connection to earth, and food and drink provided to you through your own labor.

It's 12:20 here, I just woke up and I want to share my seemingly profound but probably obvious/retarded/nonsensical idea.

The memory works in terms of connections between things, and creativity happens when different patterns of connections are made. If one wishes to create software to act as an as seamless as possible memory aid it needs to have rapid search and to be connected in a web of related information. Wikipedia works well because of all the links throughout the articles but is not ideal.

If one wants to study a novel to do a literature essay they write down lists of events and concepts and motifs and characters and settings and cuts them out and moves them around and draws lines between them. The ones with the most connections to other things are the most important and the least connections are the least important. It needs to be a web, though, not just something that branches out.

Working on efficient interfaces for this is important. It needs to be more malleable and flexible than paper, but it needs to be done with the hands and the voice. A large touch-screen wall, with voice recognition software, would be ideal. Something like that would allow efficient communication and collaboration also, with people able to draw connections between their own ideas and the ideas of others.

Pic stolen from wikipedia, and I fear I sound like timecube guy now.

Robert Pearlman – collectSPACE

"Many of the problems we have on Earth are rooted in a our need for new ideas. From medical advancements to political diplomacy, it often takes a new perspective to find the answer. Space exploration offers the rare opportunity to look inwards while pushing out. The photographs sent back of the Earth as a "fragile blue marble", a whole sphere for the first time, gave birth to the environmental movement. Astronauts, regardless of their home nation, have returned to Earth with a new world view, without borders. But the perspective isn't limited to those who leave the planet. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon, "mankind" took on a new appreciation for all of humanity. It was "we" who went, even if "we" were not living in the United States. That sense of unity was recognized by the Apollo 11 crew upon their return to the planet: Buzz turned to Neil and commented, "We missed the whole thing…"

And the whole world would be watching, said McLane, so it wouldn't be as if the lone astronaut would be completely by himself. "You would have constant communication," he said. "The astronauts on the International Space Station have an army of people on earth keeping track of what they are doing. They really have no peace. Somebody is constantly planning and monitoring their activities. I don't think being lonely will be much of a problem on a mission to Mars."

Of course McLane's hope is the solo astronaut would be joined by others shortly in the future. Orbital mechanics provides a desirable launch window from Earth to Mars every 26 months. "This person wouldn't be there by himself for very long. It's just returning home that would be impossible," he said. Another option McLane has offered is a one-man and one-woman crew, possibly creating an Adam and Eve-type situation.

Unmanned landers would carry living accommodations, supplies and communication equipment to Mars' surface before the human mission would even launch. The best location on Mars would be a low, sheltered area, perhaps at the bottom of a canyon, which would provide protection from radiation and weather, as well as the highest possible atmospheric pressure.

While technical issues abound for even the simplest human mission to Mars, McLane says technical issues didn't deter the Apollo program, and they shouldn't deter a mission to another planet.

"I can remember during the early days of the Apollo program, there were even many more technical issues than we face today in going to Mars," said McLane. "People don't realize that, or have forgotten that fact. Several things were tremendous unknowns back then, any one of which could have been a showstopper for a human moon landing."

I believe it's "galaxies" (well, a ton of matter in a blob the size of a galaxy) first, then solar systems form inside.

Point 2: Pic possibly related, imagine waking up to this out on Phobos:

As for 3: I'm sure you could find some volunteers that would do it. Living on Mars for 10 years wouldn't be THAT bad, I'm sure you would be sent e-mails and shit with news from Earth along with probes or landers to deliver supplies...It'd be alright.

We would want to load up the ship with bacteria that could survive and reproduce, though, to start terraforming the planet (or build large domes to live in, idk).
