The point isn't about getting a "skilled job", it's about realising what you find to be most interesting, and furthermore what you find most suitable to your self-concern. There are many that find learning highly enjoyable; I realised that I am one of them, and everything is so easy now. A good academic institution provides unique opportunities to refine your knowledge and push yourself beyond what you could do on your own; it compels you to create, and from that I found I love to create. My work and my passion were acknowledged, and I am well taken care of while I continue to do what I love. And if I find I want something different, then I'll have the knowledge and qualifications I need to follow through with that desire.

Why should I care about "rich corporate WASPs" or their miserable lives, except for what they offer me that I might find suitable and convenient? If I agree to employment, then I will leave the arrangement if I find it doesn't suit me. I live for myself and that which I find interesting, and there is always opportunity to pursue what I find interesting.
