Ok, nuclear reaction? Explain? is it a reaction at all? I thought it was the split of the nucleaus of an atom?

Ok sooo what generates all that energy? Such a small thing with such a big impact? An atom seems so simple. Protons, Neutrons, Electrons..

Does anyone else look back at how we explored the globe, not knowing what to expect and wondering what we would find, and compare it to how we are today, with a completely uncharted universe?

We thought the job was complete - but it's only just begun

Good afternoon /sci/. Recently, I've begun to get more and more interested in the field of astronomy and the night sky. I have a pair of pretty good binoculars that I sometimes go out at night with but most of the time I have no idea what I'm looking at other than really obvious things (Big/Little Dipper, the Moon, Orion's Belt, the ISS, and Venus). I want to familiarize myself with the night sky and eventually buy a telescope and move on to astrophotography. What is the best way to go about it this?

I figure some books on the night sky and constellations would be a good start but I'm kind of lost as the volume of things. It'd be great if anyone could point me in the right direction.
