a huge part of biology is systematization and that's what makes biology scientific. in taxonomy if you were to add another rank it needs to work on ALL life, not just humans. race might work on humans and even their animals but it doesn't work in most other species. that's why it remains as an informal rank at best.
humans are different since they are able to spread their main habitat far unlike any other species (which also means they need to adapt to said habitats), that's why the humans subspecies is more diverse than other subspecies than say a specific subspecies of elephants or ants. also humans population is big
