why does 1+0 = 1 and 1 - 1 = 0 but 9+1 isnt 11? base 10 doesnt make sense its illogical 10 doesnt appear to be a real number and shouldnt exist it should be an 11 and 11 should be 12 and 9+9 should be 19.

Fuck it. Undergraduate research is overrated in my opinion. You either publish shitty work in a shitty journal on your own or you turn a wrench for your professor and get 13th author in a respectable journal. I'm sure there are prodigies who have broken this dichotomy, but I sure as hell haven't seen them.
