Doesn't rely on Mars' magnetosphere at all. You create a magnetic field, and it deflects the solar wind electrons, creating a charge gradient which deflects the heavier protons much more effectively than the magnetic field alone. This effect is observed in natural magnetic anomalies on the moon.
The actual issue might be Mars' atmosphere might block the electrons upon which this relies, but perhaps you could inject them yourself.
