Why are people retarded and say "1" or "10" to the following statement?

Going to try and describe this the best way I can. I have a problem that is holding me back when doing general math work. I always seem to be trying really hard to understand "why?" a certain problem is answered the way it is. It feels like half of the time I am answering questions by a skill of memorization and not because I fully understand the concept. Is it just me or is it because for the most part, teachers teach this way? I don't ever remember teachers explaining the intuitions or why/what a strand of math means but just how to "solve" it.

This thing has been bugging me for ages and has made me want to pull my hair apart many times.

what does /sci/ have to say about the effectiveness of alternative energy sources? Do you think we will be able to make a peaceful transition away from being an oil dependent society? Will nuclear fission ever become a viable source of energy?

I have this nagging fear that if we don't get our shit together within 50 years there will be some serious fights over the world's dwindling oil supply.
