This study is from last summer, so it's not recent at all. Though even recently I think the data still holds. IIRC India was basically over COVID by now.

There are basically two common links:
1) Western European ancestry.
2) Recently mixed ancestry (Afro-Americans, Latinos, "Native Americans" who are in reality mixed, and some Euro-Americans.)

It's certainly not just a flu
travel has no effect on it, travel bans are just theater. Whenever a new strain comes up, it's already present globally in small amounts. The only way travel would matter is if any country had shut down literally all, or almost all travel into the country (not even China has done this)

There are two possibilities, not mutually exclusive:

1) the virus really is a bioweapon, and it is targeted toward Europeans specifically, while leaving Asians specifically unharmed.
2) Asians simply have a genetic immune profile that is more adapted for this virus. This also makes sense when you look at the historical tolls from the Black Death (50% in Europe, 20% in the Middle East, much lower in Asia)

A really special thing about the Mongoloid phenotype is that it is the only morphology where the thymus does not atrophy. All other races (not just European) lack thymic persistence. Interestingly thymic persistence is also higher in fat people, women, and young people, the latter two of which we know for a fact have superior immunity.
