I think this is much of the problem.

Girls aren't encouraged to build and create things.

this is a /sci/-relevant request. I'd like that graphic parodizing(or maybe not?) some feminist about how some scientific concept, like the speed of light or something, is sexist. I remember it had the picture of the woman, a professor at harvard or somewhere, with some text she supposedly had written. does this sound familiar to anyone?

It's an evidence that society's bigotry fucks little girls so most won't be interested in science or prepared to do it in the end.

I'm surprised that nobody posted this yet. We nurture a culture in which women are expected to be bad at math and science because we ridicule their interest in it when they're young as we're parenting them. It isn't an issue of men being repressive asshats. It's everybody's fault, even the mothers.

When I was young I got Knex and a computer for Christmas presents. My cousin, she got a (pink, hardly functional) bicycle (with streamers and a heavy steel frame, no gears) and a dollhouse. You'll never guess who is studying in a STEM field now.

I, for one, would kill to see more women scientists and engineers. It's really boring that every conversation about things that I'm interested in turns into a mens club.

If she had proof of this I would believe her.
If anything this is just proof that girls have their mental well being fucked up by shit like Barbie and are told to be consumer whores and marry a rich man. As a result they don't go into science, and science develops a perceived male bias. I will also admit that there were some fuck ups in the past, look at those assholes Watson and Crick, but generally science is fairly gender unbiased now.

At my uni it's 60/40 women to men in math. ALthough there is some sexism still present in academia, basically anyone who thinks they can't get into math courses because of sexism is a retards. Here's the real reason (excuse sauce)

It's been demonstrated that on average, teachers instructing in math and science spend less time helping their female students.
This is most likely because of a perception that this effort will not be as useful, because they are seen as either masculine pursuits, or because men tend to be innately better at these subjects.

Furthermore, while it's become more accepted for women to be interested in professional work (doctor, lawyer, etc), the academic and engineering disciplines are still dominated by the image of being very "nerdy" and "un-sexy". Society pressures women to be more image conscious. The product of this and the above attitudes produces a negative pressure for women to pursue these careers.

Moving even further into the speculative realm, I feel that engineering, math, and scientific fields tend to be occupied by people with poorer social skills than the general population. This, along with the prevalence of men, can reinforce sexist attitudes that, at best, make women uncomfortable to enter these realms in either school or the workplace.

I estimate our male:female ratio to around 10:1 in physics here. Just pick any science that requires you to think and all of a sudden the amount of women will drop significantly (spare philosophy maybe).
Nope, I don't hate women ... wait there's this SMBC saying all I have to say. See pic.
