Black holes form from stars, right?

Black holes have mass and gravity so strong even light can't escape it, right?

If a black hole is formed from the mass of a star, how does it end up with so much more mass that has that kind of gravity well? Why doesn't a star have that kind of gravity if a black hole is formed by a collapsing star?

I've been wondering about something lately, /sci/.

Human beings were around for probably thousands and thousands of years before they started making tools and equipment that would survive long enough for us to find the remains today. However, if there a gap of several million years, or even hundreds of millions of years, between those humans and us, we'd probably have no evidence of them ever existing other than bones.

So, is it possible that there have existed other non-primate-based sentient species that lived but never made it past the basic toolmaking stage, died out, and now no evidence of their sentience remains?

Help me out here, /sci/.

I'm posting this here, even though it's a little off topic, since this is arguably the "smartest" board.

I'm turning 30 soon. I didn't finish college (no real reason, just couldn't choose a major), been working mediocre jobs since. I make enough money to live comfortably single, but I would like to get married and have kids pretty soon.

What job professions pay well, are hiring and will be for the foreseeable future, and don't require six years of schooling or something?

Halp.

I'm 29 years old. I went to college for a couple years after high school, got most of my required shit done, but I couldn't figure out anything I wanted to major in and took a break and never went back. Big mistake.

I've been thinking of going back and majoring in Chemistry. Why Chemistry? I always liked it in high school and I always wished I would've learned more.

But what can you actually do with a four-year Chemistry degree? What type of jobs could I get? Good idea, bad idea? Halp.

One of you who knows more about this shit than me... The whole Gulf oil spill thing...

Why can't they just drop a big fucking bomb on the well and make a bunch of earth collapse on it?
