Hi /sci/, I've been reading up on elliptic curves and had a question:

In regards to motivating Hasse's bound on the number of points on E(F_q), why is q+1 the "expected" number of solutions to the elliptic curve E over F_q? The closest thing to an answer I've seen is because q+1 is the number of points on the projective line over F_q, but I don't see the connection...

Any explanations would be appreciated. Thanks.

/sci/, at what level do I need to be at in mathematics in order to begin studying category theory? The premise of this field fascinates me, and I would like to try to read a book on it, but I have no idea what to expect.

If I had experience with standard undergrad courses in math, would I be prepared? Or would I need at least to be at a graduate level to try category theory?

Also, any recommendations on good books in the area?

Now over time, the trees begin to be too little to support either species. An advantage, however, is given to the 5-6ft species who require less food due to their shorter size, but both species have equal access to food. Species B dies off at a quicker rate as it is less able to support its population. Eventually, the 5-6ft species is now outnumbering the 7ft species.

From that we've had an example of extinction occurring, and showing how one species can eventually rise to become the dominant species when it was once the smaller species. Are there any major problems with it?

If you did some memory related exercises each day (like the card game, memory) I have heard it can increase your short term memory a little, but I have no proof or studies to back this up.

Similarly, just trying to consciously commit things to memory may help. For example, if you walk anywhere constantly, try and remember and recall the license plates of the cars. Basically just do small activities like this whenever your mind isn't too occupied. Again, nothing to back this up, but unlike the previous suggestion it would be less intrusive to your schedule and you would probably end up cramming in more time spent doing it than the other suggestion also.

Psych fags, want to prove me right/wrong?
