Why do we assume the universe is a closed system?

Do you agree that under massive dictatorships and/or empires, science and technological progress is fasted, and the journey of mankind to space is most important aspect of daily life ? If so, do you find it sad, that we do not have such a superpower anymore?

Is democracy, human rights and ethics holding science and progress back?

For instance, imagine if the USSR and Nazi Germany did not fail. It would lead to much suffering, but would it have been better for humanity and the survival for our species in the long term? Humans being united under a common goal and cause, willing to sacrifice their individuality and freedom that is poisoning our society for a greater purpose?
