It would be a better idea to allow it to plan its upgrade, but not allow it to update itself, at least until we know that it can do it competently without ruining all its programming with an error. And even if we did allow that at some point, there would need to be at least one backup from a reliable version and an emergency shutoff that the ai couldn't access (I know that the chances of a rouge ai being dangerous are very slim, but still).
