By the time we're a space-faring race we'll most probably have something like the Australia Project with abundance and pretty much everything is cheap as SHIT with some standardized credit system.
There's too much of anything in space to use it to trade. For instance, you'll most probably find several kilos of gold inside a smallish 100m diameter asteroid at least. Wouldn't be too hard to find some other metal to replace, but same problem. Abuncance.
