I actually have a sensible question about quantum tunneling.

Given that QT is a product of the uncertainty principle does the electron or whatever take a finite amount of time to cross the barrier or is it instant?

Also given that subatomic particles are indistinguishable from one another is there any way to tell if they swap around? For example you have some Hydrogen atoms floating about, since the electrons are all in the same energy level could they be swapping between the protons? This question is more idle speculation that a sensible query.
