Hey /sci/, why do mathematicians believe that 0.999... = 1 ?

Even a 6th grader could disprove it.
Allow me to demonstrate.
1 - 0.000...1 = 0.999... = 1
However, 0.999... - 0.000...1 = 0.999...8, which decisively != 1. How do mathematicians make this mistake all the time, and then claim that they're great at math?!
