/sci/, I'm currently touring grad schools, as I graduate early with my degree in Physics in December. I'm interested in advice on what to do and what not to do to maximize my graduate work.

anybody have any strategies or tips for speeding up mental math? (other than practice, obviously)

Despite being decent at math, my mental math for things like multiplication is really slow, and its annoying having to use a calculator even for basic things

Disclaimer: I am a capitalist. I subscribe to a classical liberal view of economics, which in America is usually called libertarianism.

However, irrespective of my beliefs about economics, this is independent of the scientific facts.

I mean, economics can exist without the concept of markets in a true command economy.

See, there is simply too much information to prove absolutely everything and measure everything. Intellect and data are rare commodities in the real world. That is why we have beliefs about things. Beliefs by default are assumptions. They may be correct, incorrect, or simply not applicable.

I can *think* that communism is not viable as a economic system, but I cannot *prove* that to be the case in all scenarios.

In other words, I am relying on inductive logic, it didn't work here, here and here and here. But I cannot show by deductive logic that communism cannot work because there is too much information to analyse and doing all necessary experiments is literally impossible unless the entire population becomes our labrats forever.

Put simply; being a scientist is about accepting your limitations. There are things you cannot do.

Lastly; your classmates are morons. There is no helping these people nor is it your duty to relieve them of their misconceptions. You ought to take advantage of their gullibility in some way instead. If you know the truth, you have an advantage. e.g. you might select men as army units because that makes much more fucking sense.

Hey /sci/, I've recently became interested with amateur rocketry, and after buying and making a few simple black powder rocket, I've decided I want to take the next step up. So, I'm going too try rocket candy; The problem is, I know how to make the fuel itself, but I don't know what materials I should use for the nozzle and the rocket casing. Of course, it should be lightweight and relatively strong, but I also want something cheap and relatively easy to obtain.
Also, general amateur rocketry thread.

>if marginal revenue is greater than marginal cost, marginal profit is positive, and if marginal revenue is less than marginal cost, marginal profit is negative. When marginal revenue equals marginal cost, marginal profit is zero.[1] Since total profit increases when marginal profit is positive and total profit decreases when marginal profit is negative, it must reach a maximum where marginal profit is zero - or where marginal cost equals marginal revenue

Explain to me in english why profit is maximized when MR=MC
MR is marignal revenue, the derivative of a demand function, or the profit from selling an additional unit.

MC is the marginal cost, the derivative of a cost function, or the cost of producing an additional unit.

saying that your conclusions are scientific(what does that even mean to you) and logical doesn't mean they automatically are.

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-03-physicists-antihelium-nucleus-heaviest-antinucleus.html

In 1932, scientists observed the first antimatter particle, a positron (or antielectron). Since then, scientists have observed heavier and heavier states of antimatter: antiprotons and antineutrons in 1955, followed by antideuterons, antitritons, and antihelium-3 during the next two decades. Advances in accelerator and detector technology led to the first production of antihydrogen in 1995 and antihypertriton (strange antimatter) in 2010. Now, scientists with the STAR collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory have observed another state of antimatter for the first time: the antimatter helium-4 nucleus, which is the heaviest antinucleus observed so far.

How long until we have a periodic table of anti-elements?

Most important: GET OLD TESTS FROM STUDENTS WHO HAD HIM LAST TIME!

If your book is by Peter Atkins (worst problems any book has ever assigned):

1) Get INSTRUCTOR'S solutions manual for the book

2) Copy all of the homework before you attempt it. Then try and do it on your own.

3) See the professor every time he has office hours. This is the most important part. Your professor is probably an attention whorish douchebag who gets off on making the class seem much harder than it really is. Seeing him everyday and sucking up to him by saying "this stuff is so hard" is your key to success. He'll help you solve the problems, and it'll help guide you on what to prepare for when taking the test.

4) Adderall an all-nighter before the tests. Review the notes and the homework problems he assigned.

5) Don't try and do what is assigned in a legitimate manner. Worst idea ever. Seriously.

All of your physics professors are probably all socialists too, even though those theories have been, continue to be, and always will be proven much more inefficient and oppressive than free markets.

Your professors are self important and ego maniacal idiots. Sometimes they're useful idiots, but mostly just idiots.
