I think most psychology is a scam.
Right now I'm a fan of the theory of most abnormal behavior manifesting itself due to coping behaviors developed in childhood and adolescence. Its deeper than your conscious thoughts.
You cant make conscious decisions to not be anxious when your subconscious is using outdated and improper tools to ensure your wellbeing, in this case staying invisible, out of the way, or being "the awkward one."

But this is all just mostly theory, so who the hell knows. It's all just people who think they're right teaching students their theories in perpetuity.
