going halfway between magnetic confinement and laser ignition

Slowly realising I may want to go into nuclear physics and energy research. Currently very interested in fusion and was wondering if there are any good introductory books and if there is a useful order in which to learn the important concepts (I am a second year physics undergraduate).

tl;dr favourite books on fusion / nuclear physics

whatever the fuck that thing is doesn't look intuitive as magnetized target fusion

You'll need a fusion reactor to at least virtually stop death.

and speaking of which

depends on the type
magnetic confinement or inertial confinement? decades, maybe half a century

magnetized target fusion? maybe a little as 15 years, depends on how swimmingly the general fusion prototype goes

MCF and ICF probably aren't going to work, too many gremlins, too much instability in the plasma which kills your efficiencies, it's like trying to firmly grasp soap without it slipping even a millimeter in your hands

look up magnetized target fusion (MTF), it might skip the plasma gremlins problem, not to mention the giant volume of lead means more complete capture of neutrons = higher heat absorption = higher efficiency

plus it looks cool

he's talking about magnetized target fusion, which looks pretty promising.
however i'm willing to bet they'll lose a lot of efficiency to imperfect implosions caused by...you guessed it....turbulence

There's lots of experiments under way. I haven't been brushing up on the most recent developments but a quick google does the trick.

Can anyone here tell me about photonic engineers and if you know someone or have experience can you tell me what you do on a daily basis?

I've decided that i want to be one but there are no photonic majors in texas that i know of and the majority go to grad school, so i'll just end up majoring in mechanical instead.

I'd really like to know how to become one and what's it like to be one.

Thank you /sci/

magnetic confinement fusion is dead
long live magnetized target fusion
