Perhaps. Deep sea vents are a good source for all sorts of chemicals and heat (and heat gradient with cold surrounding waters), all of which could be very useful. There's all sorts of weird stuff going on in the universe, and anyone who says no because it is not the way it happened on Earth lacks imagination, but then science fiction doesn't really belong on /sci/, either.

Any ideas as to how Iapetus got its equatorial ridge?

Is it merely a process of gravity, forcing the mass to rise?

Or aliens?
