They find new shit all the time, but usually it's just slight variations on known species. That 10% of the time when it's something noteworthy though, it's some brain melting abyssal terror you want to forget exists.

Pic related. He waits for you in the deep.

>Ever read "The Millennial Project"?

Yeah, about that one. Is there *any* version online? Last time I searched was about six months ago. I don't want to buy a hardcopy ;_;

>Why is it illogical to hold that the belief that there may exist objects whose existence cannot be proven?

Because is illogical to hold a belief about something unobservable and for which no evidence exists. That includes believing that it exists as well as believing that it does not.

As it is completely irrelevant, the only logical thing to do is move on as though it does not exist. No belief is required.

By comparison with the ocean floor, I mean.

Literally every expedition to the ocean floor has turned up new species. Multi-week expeditions with dozens of repeat dives regularly discover between a few hundred and a few thousand new species. Often mundane variations on crustaceans, eels, cehalopods and so on but reliably there's a few dozen really bizarre specimens that wind up in the headlines because they make for stunning photos.

That's a *tremendous* return on investment. You get the most science for your buck, by far, exploring the ocean.
