It is generally assumed that human intelligence relies on efficient processing by neurons in our brain. Although grey matter thickness and activity of temporal and frontal cortical areas correlate with IQ scores, no direct evidence exists that links structural and physiological properties of neurons to human intelligence. Here, we find that high IQ scores and large temporal cortical thickness associate with larger, more complex dendrites of human pyramidal neurons. We show in silico that larger dendritic trees enable pyramidal neurons to track activity of synaptic inputs with higher temporal precision, due to fast action potential kinetics. Indeed, we find that human pyramidal neurons of individuals with higher IQ scores sustain fast action potential kinetics during repeated firing. These findings provide the first evidence that human intelligence is associated with neuronal complexity, action potential kinetics and efficient information transfer from inputs to output within cortical neurons.

Is IQ the worst thing ever conceived? Instead of ranking people based on what they've contributed or accomplished, people rate themselves based on some "potential" that never means anything in the long run.

Uh, no, sweetie, you aren't. We can't just rank people based on a stupid broken and inconsistent test score. It just makes people feel smart, and it makes people rank each other based on some arbitrary number, that's right, you are putting a number to someone's intelligence. I mean, the only worthy rank is to rate people based on how much they have actually contributed, and what they have actually done. Judge the quality and quantity of their engineering rather than ability to recognize a stupid pattern.

When I was a kid, I was good at school, but not so bright otherwise. I was naive about the world and believed everything the other kids did. I don't think my IQ was higher than 115. But something changed during my mid-20's, and I began researching and putting lots of work into everything. My intelligence grew exponentially and soon my mind became incomprehensible to the average person, having an IQ of at least over 130.

Is something like this possible? Can a person increase his IQ?

I can never learn in class, there are so many people you constantly have to pay attention and I still don t get it. On paper it is often too complicated.

I took an IQ test during a job interview/screening. I have a rough Idea of how many answers I got correct but I was hoping someone could tell me how to figure it out based on what I encountered.

Hey /sci/, do you think IQ matters or is it a meme?

As a kid I didn't qualify for gifted programs, so obviously I had sub 120 IQ. Even as a teenager I didn't feel that smart. But then in my later years in college it felt like I became more and more intelligent at a frightening pace, and now should easily be an IQ of 130+. I'm at the point now where I feel like I have nothing in common with the puny mortals walking down the street beside me.

Does anyone else know this feel? Is it possible for IQ to just jump up like that?
