How do you cope with the fact that millions of photons are zipping around you constantly, bouncing off of things and gradually heat things they bounce off?

I thought this was the science board.

Or, wait, does it mean this just a 'science' photography board where you look at pretty pictures of space and talk about high school math problems?

Science is the EPITOME of anal.

Fuck off.

Is he really just popular because he's a black, athiest, "scientist" who posts politically correct things on le circlejerk?

>Biblical criticism

If I write a book filled with bat shit crazy anecdotes and contradictions would you dedicate your life to refuting it? Probably not, so why bother with the bible? Become a scientist instead.

Since 0.999.. = 1

Does that mean that 1.999.. = 2? Is 0.4999.. = 0.5?

-> Dis guy always says, 'Very few astrophysicists... about one in 1000/1 000 000(?)... ask as many questions as possible now."

My question for /sci/ is, are there there not many astrophysicists because:
> a) Very difficult field to enter
> b) Most people want to be theoretical physicists/go in to "traditional" forms of physics
> c) Is Neil spouting crap and he only says this to encourage interesting discussion since cameramen aren't paid for one hour of awkward pauses

Serious question. Considering Astrophysics/Physics.

Does Neil deGrasse Tyson come off as an elitist prick to anyone else? Really, i used to have far more respect for him, but then i watch a StarTalk where he interviewed Alan Rickman.

He was making comments in response to Alan Rickman's difficulties with physics during his school years that would often culminate in something to the effect of, "So then you became an actor!".

It was the delivery that rubbed me the wrong way, as if he was suggesting his own position as an astrophysicist was the only noble and respectable path or position, and others were comparably effortless and meaningless.

His mentioning philosophers as "Wasting a lot of ink" and "distracting themselves" with issues also came off as asinine, as though he believes philosophy and science to be adversarial fields of study.

Am i missing something, here?

I'm starting uni next year and I have to decide what course to apply for in just a few months.. I'm not too interested in money, I just want a fun and interesting job. What do you think is more fun, engineering or science? And what specific field? I would say that my interest is about the same for both: I love to tinker with stuff and solving practical problems, but I would also love to learn how the world works and contribute to this knowledge.

I know you have no reason to believe this and you probably shouldn't but hypothetically, lets say I am Neil Degrasse Tyson and the administrator of this board said it would be OK if I did a Q&A here.

Would you be appreciative of my appearance or would the thread be bombarded with racism and derogation?

Inspired in part by the successes of the Saturn V and the momentum of the Apollo program, visionaries of the day foretold a future that never came to be: space habitats, Moon bases, and Mars colonies up and running by the 1990s. But funding for the Saturn V evaporated as the Moon missions wound down. Additional production runs were canceled, the manufacturers' specialized machine tools were destroyed, and skilled personnel had to find work on other projects. Today U.S. engineers can't even build a Saturn V clone.

What cultural forces froze the Saturn V rocket in time and space? What misconceptions led to the gap between expectation and reality?

Soothsaying tends to come in two flavors: doubt and delirium. It was doubt that led skeptics to declare that the atom would never be split, the sound barrier would never be broken, and people would never want or need computers in their homes. But in the case of the Saturn V rocket, it was delirium that misled futurists into assuming the Saturn V was an auspicious beginning—never considering that it could, instead, be an end.

So I reinstalled Win 7 and now at boot I get a message asking me which OS I want to boot into.. "Windows 7" or "Windows 7". Only one of them work.

My question is, why did this happen? I did a fresh install on a formatted drive, why do I now have two boot records or whatever is going on? I have another disk in the PC, but it's only for storage and I never installed anything related to windows on it.

Neil Degrasse Tyson is working with Wu Tang Clan on an album.

No...really.

>I do not know much about writing rap lyrics, but I’m guessing that most rappers do not meet with physicists and cosmologists from MIT and Cornell before sitting down to write. But that’s exactly what Wu-Tang Clan founding member GZA did during the creation of his new album, Dark Matter — a project the rapper hopes will turn his audience on to science.

I was just about to say that. Neil deGrasse Tyson agrees.
