I just really don't like people who spend all their time talking about "the insignificance of the earth and humanity compared to the vastness of the universe" etc etc. we get it. the universe is big. its amazing. etc. It's really obnoxious to talk like humanity doesn't matter. pop-science helps get the public interested in science, but for all the wrong reasons. I hate it and love it at the same time.

Every time I see a friend share a buzzfeed or cracked article about some science topic, I cringe.

The bobbing motions of this inauspicious tree trunk are inexplicably mimetic to the billions and billions of cocks that the OP is likely to have sucked throughout the entire history of his insignificant existence on this point of pale light.

How many books are there in your shelf? How many of them did you actually read?

What was the last thing you have learned?
What do you want to learn or research next? When will you start?

I just found out that my troubled little sister has a growing interest in astronomy and I want to find some fascinating videos for her to cultivate this interest.

Does anyone have some personal favorites? Preferably stuff that a 14-year-old kid would be able to understand. She's smart but I doubt she knows much about astronomy at this point.

There are three kinds of people who try and go against the validity of IQ testing.

Not a meteorite. There are a couple of easy ways to tell if a rock might be a meteor fragment.

If it's much much heavier than it looks - this could be a fragment from a nickel-iron impactor. Check if it's ferromagnetic (put a magnet on it and see if it sticks).

If it has "spots" and "fleks" - this could be a fragment from a carbonaceous chondrite meteor. The spots and fleks are, respectively, small amounts of silicon compounds and metals that were accreted when the asteroid was forming.

Also check for charring on the surface of the rock.

doesn't it ever creep up on you? a little voice that nags away until it's so loud you can't quiet it? the realisation that succeeding in school won't bring any genuine benefit or happiness, that it will always be subjective and short-lived? that you enjoy music and friends because those activities have been programmed by your mind, a relatively simple machine, to cause certain electrochemical signals to be produced?

why not live a life that you only think you have control over, but has actually been predetermined for you by your evolutionary history and learned behavior ingrained during early development? because happiness is what you strive for, but everything that composes your "self-awareness" will keep you from ever being truly, endlessly happy. parts of your brain that developed millions of years ago will always cause anxiety, fear, depression, suspicion, regret. even if you were to achieve permanent bliss, it would be subjective, and you would still die. what does it matter if you die in 50 years from now, or today. you will never be ready for it and it'll be equally inconsequential.
