I was in the Voyager thread but that shit was retarded, but, serious question: What would altering someone's DNA actually do?

Typically in sci-fi's altering someone's DNA would make them turn into another creature (injecting them with frog DNA, they'd become a frog or frog/human hybrid or something stupid). Realistically what would happen?

Would the body just produce proteins that the body didn't need/couldn't handle and cause the individual to die? Would it be like starvation? I know it's a really broad question because there are tons of way you could alter DNA (assuming you could just magically change it), but, yeah. Answer and speculate away.

Less stupid policies and killing people? More emphasis on practical technology? MY GOD IT'S FUCKING GENIUS HURR DURR.

I should point out that they were basic flaws that many University level students could find.

Don't get me wrong, this kid is well ahead of children his age, but once you remove his age from the equation his mathematical abilities and general intellect are nothing special and probably below a lot of people in his Uni classes (he's just younger).

Then you add in the fact that when most people see Uni level math they don't understand a bit off it and think it takes some sort of super genius to understand.

Mix all this together and you go from "kid who is ahead for his age" to "HOLY FUCK IT'S TONY STARK GENIUS EVERYTHING HE SAYS MUST BE TRUE BIG BANG IS WRONG XD STUPID ATHEISTS"

It doesn't help that most people are having their beliefs affirmed by him and will believe him simply because of that instead of actually trying to comprehend is ideas and see the flaws in the process.

What the average University student in the 1800s relatively smarter than the average student today? When I think of Unis from the late 18 and early 19 hundreds I think of tons of kids who know their shit actively engaging in research, even at a basic level, yet Uni nowadays is not like that at all. There are so many retards.

Is it just my perception that is wrong, or are there just more idiots in academic settings today?

Hey.

Is having too many interests a bad thing? I'm doing biology, but recently have became quite interested in math and astronomy and less interested in biology/chem, but I still want to get a degree in that field (already 3 years in anyway). Could pursuing math and astronomy in my spare time at all impede with my biology and chem work?
