Mathematics is certainly not innate. Thats why its so hard for us and takes years of schooling.

Compare math to language. Children literally just absorb language. You don't have to go through any special effort to teach them, they will just learn.

Nothing like that happens with mathematics.

Your argument is missing the point. Chimps can't learn mathematics because they don't have language, and the only way we can teach mathematics is through language. OP you are a brainlet.

Do I have to be competitive to succeed in academia?

I'm doing a masters degree now just because I love the subject I am studying, and its the only thing that keeps me constantly interested.

I don't really have that competitive drive to get into the top PhD programs that I see in many of my fellow students. Between my current work in my masters program and what I did in undergrad, I've managed to scrape together a pretty decent research portfolio, working on projects that I think are really important. Low quantity but high quality. I have my doubts that it will be able to compete with the resume stuffers that I will be going up against in admissions. I look at these people's LinkedIns and the amount of fluff and bullshit is just insane. Do I have to play their game to survive in academics?
